It’s Time to Invest in the Food We Eat — If You Want to Heal & Conceive
There’s a quiet war being waged — not with bombs, but with barcodes. Not on foreign lands, but in your fridge and on your fork. The battlefield? Our food system.
We’ve been conditioned — by convenience, by clever marketing, by the pace of modern life — to believe food should be fast, cheap, and easy. Supermarket shelves are lined with ultra-processed options. Food apps deliver sugar hits to your door in minutes. But this "progress" comes with a cost.
And our grandparents would have been horrified.
They didn’t count calories or cut carbs. They cooked with full-fat butter, raised chickens in the garden, picked vegetables from the earth, and knew the butcher by name. Yes, their lives were different — war times, ration books, less abundance — but food was respected. It was real. It was medicine.
Today, we have more food than ever, and yet we are more malnourished. Not in calories — but in nutrients, connection, and care.
The Processed Food Problem
According to a 2023 study published in The Lancet, ultra-processed foods (UPFs) now make up over 50% of the average UK and US diet. These foods are often stripped of nutrients and packed with additives, preservatives, and hidden sugars designed to keep you addicted and coming back for more.
And while they might save you time and money short-term, they’re stealing your long-term health, especially when it comes to hormones and fertility.
Fertility and Food: The Missing Link
You can take all the supplements in the world. You can track ovulation, do IVF, acupuncture, and mindset work. But if the foundation — your food — is built on toxins and deficiencies, your body is running uphill.
✅ A 2018 study from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that women who followed a "fertility diet" rich in whole foods and organic produce had a 66% lower risk of infertility due to ovulatory disorders.
✅ Pesticides matter. A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine showed that women who consumed the highest levels of pesticide-contaminated fruits and vegetables were 26% less likely to conceive than those who ate the least.
✅ Sperm count has declined by more than 50% in the last 40 years, according to a meta-analysis published in Human Reproduction Update. Many scientists believe that endocrine-disrupting chemicals in food and packaging (like BPA, pesticides, and plastics) are playing a key role.
It’s Time to Take Back Control
If you’re lucky enough to have access to outdoor space — even a windowsill — grow something. Grow basil. Grow tomatoes. Grow hope. You’d be amazed what you can cultivate in a raised bed, balcony pot, or vertical wall garden.
Organic food is an investment — but it's one in your energy, your hormones, your future children, and your legacy.
We must become more autonomous and intentional about what we put in our bodies. We cannot outsource our health to the food industry — because they don’t care about your mitochondria, your menstrual cycle, or your mental health.
You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to overhaul your whole kitchen in one day. But choose one thing today:
→ Buy organic when it matters most (e.g., the Dirty Dozen)
→ Cook one meal from scratch and batch them up
→ Swap seed oils for olive oil
→ Say no to sugary snacks
Small acts of rebellion that say: “I’m not playing this game anymore.”
Let Food Be Medicine — But Don’t Confuse the Two
There’s a popular saying floating around Instagram: “Let food be thy medicine.” And while it’s rooted in ancient wisdom, I’ll say this with love and clarity:
Food is not your medicine.
Food is your foundation.
You shouldn't have to rely on medicine if your food is doing its job — nourishing, energising, detoxifying, and repairing. We need to flip the narrative: medicine should be the emergency plan. Food is your prevention, your fertility fuel, your vitality.
Let’s bring back the sacredness of food.
Let’s remember its origins, its power, its pleasure.
Let’s slow down, prepare, chew, and give thanks.
Not because it’s trendy.
But because your body — your future baby — your brain — they’re begging for it.
We don’t need another dopamine hit.
We need nourishment.
And the revolution starts with what’s on your plate.
Get intentional with your food and support your body for conception and long-term health Take your power back, one bite at a time.
